What Makes a Law Firm Fitout Different

Soundproofing for Offices and Meeting Rooms
Advice given to a client is privileged, so partner offices and meeting rooms are built for acoustic privacy. The walls are insulated and run above the ceiling, the doors are solid with seals, and the glazing is chosen for sound as well as light.

Reception and Client Meeting Rooms
Clients are met at reception and taken to a meeting room without walking past desks or open files. We plan reception, waiting and the client meeting rooms together at the front of the floor, apart from where the work is done.

Secure File Rooms and Storage
Files, deeds and documents held in safe custody need lockable rooms and often mobile shelving. Shelving full of files is heavy, so the floor loading is checked with the building before the file room is positioned.

Most firms mix private offices for partners with open plan workspaces for junior staff and people who are in part of the week. We set the offices out so daylight still reaches the open floor, usually with glazed fronts and solid walls between them.

Working Around Clients, Files and Deadlines
A firm cannot stop seeing clients or miss a filing date because of a fit out. We stage the work a few offices at a time, and keep reception and at least one meeting room in use throughout.
Client files stay secure while we work. The file room is relocated before its area is opened up, and the work area is closed off from the offices still in use.
Noisy work is done after hours, which most office towers require in any case. We book the goods lift and the loading dock through building management and complete the inductions before we start.

The cost of a law firm fit out depends mostly on how many private offices and meeting rooms you need, because walls, doors and soundproofing cost more than open plan. Reception joinery, the condition of the floor and the building’s after-hours rules affect it as well. We inspect the space and send a written quote setting out what is included and what is not, with options priced where the budget is tight.
How long does a law firm fitout take?
It depends on whether it is a single job or a complete fitout. Adding a meeting room or a run of partitions can take a few days. A complete fitout usually takes 4 to 8 weeks. Where the lawyers stay in the office the work is staged a few offices at a time, which takes longer. We give you a programme with dates once we have seen the space.

Can you soundproof a lawyer’s office or a meeting room?
We can make it private. No wall is completely soundproof, but our standard plasterboard partitions reduce sound by about 45dB and our acoustic systems by up to 55dB. For a legal office the walls are insulated and run above the ceiling, the doors are solid with seals, and the glazing is chosen for sound as well as light.

Do you handle the make good when we move out?
Yes. We remove the offices and meeting rooms and reinstate the floor to what the lease requires. Our defit and make good work is priced against the make good clause, so it is worth having us read it before the move is planned.
